Biodiversity Carbon provides carbon reductions through the online platform Carbon Neutral Planet. It allows citizens, business, and institutions to reduce their carbon footprint by supporting forest regeneration in Querétaro’s Sierra Gorda Biosphere Reserve, an ecological wonder that covers 383,567 ha and forms part of the Sierra Madre Oriental bio-corridor.
Biodiversity Carbon works to sequester CO2 by protecting and regenerating forests of high value for conservation in the Sierra Gorda. These forests are extremely valuable due to their wealth of flora and fauna, much of which is endemic or endangered. Yet these forests hold no economic value or return for rural landowners. As a result, they are often degraded by logging, cattle grazing, and provoked fires, devastating ecosystem health and wildlife and causing CO2 to be released into the atmosphere.
By providing payments for ecosystem services to landowners, we attribute economic value to healthy forests and provide the rural economy with sources of income. In exchange for payments, the owners of these forests commit to monitoring their properties, preventing forest fires, and eliminating cattle grazing, logging, hunting, and poaching of animal and plant species. We provide comprehensive and continuous training and support for forest owners who participate in Biodiversity Carbon so that they may become true stewards of their forests.
These actions allow the forest biomass to grow, significantly benefiting biodiversity. Endemic, threatened, and endangered species benefit directly from the protection and restoration of their habitat. Furthermore, growing forests sequester CO2 from the atmosphere—according to conservative research approved by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), each hectare of restored forest sequesters 3 tons of CO2e per year.
Biodiversity Carbon and its replication in other states of Mexico is projected to mitigate 1.6 million tons of MtCO2e between 2016 and 2030.
